    Welcome !!!
Welcome to richleung.com version 2. Since it has been over 8 years since I started this site I thought a bit more effort is now required. The version 1 site has attracted over 11,000 page requests since it was first released on January 10, 2001. I hope this one will do even better.

Still playing with XML and trying to sort out more of the XSL and automated side. It is going rather well so far and hope to put some new features up shortly. The ultimate hope will be to able to sort out the administration side and make the site self-generating.

If you have any comments then email me here.

    New websites (diary)
I recently purchased leung.ws so that I can build a website for the family. I'm currently still setting it up and using soopportal.org to see if I can not only set up the website but allow others, such as my brother, to update info for his family too. Take a look at it and let me know what you think.

    Back in the UK... (diary)
Got back into the UK late last night and managed to get up to Leeds lunchtime today. It would have been earlier but I was meant to have a meeting in BTC which got cancelled while I was there waiting for it...!

The flight from HK was OK. I got upgraded to first class as the plane was full. Better seat than I had booked as the seat I had reserved was by the window requiring me to climb over someone to get out. All in all the first class experience was good although I found the seat uncomfortable in the upright position. It did go flat which was an improvement and everything else was pleasent. I managed to see quite a few movies on the flight as I opted to stay awake rather than sleep since we were landing at 8PM. I did manage to sleep for a couple of hours though.

At Heathrow I got through everywhere OK but managed to leave my case on the Heathrow Express. Not impressive when I fnally found out and turned the taxi around. Got the case and received a lecture on security etc which I listened oh so intently too. Just pleased they did not decide to blow the case up as it had some dried pork in there and that would have been a waste. Few other things of note such as DVD's and games but all could have been replaced I suppose.

I stayed overnight at Club Quarters as usual and was fairly relaxed about it all. Found a new room that I like there so I now have a few to choose from. The bed was large but actually 2 beds screwed together. I would have preferred a slightly smaller but joined bed but the reality was that I was going to be too tired to really care. I went to sleep around 11:30pm but still woke up at 4AM which was a little depressing.

Hoping for a good night's sleep tonight...!

    Happy Birthday Freya (celeb)
It's my niece's birthday today so a big Happy Birthday to her. Apparently they are all sick with the 'flu so it's a good job the birthday party is on Saturday, sickness permitting. Here's hoping!!

Going back to the UK tomorrow (diary)
Doing the final preparations before I leave for the UK tomorrow. Not enough time to do everything but isn't that always the case...?

Went for a walk today (diary)
After the movie Stephen and I walked from Admiralty to Aberdeen over Wan Chai gap. Unfortunately I forgot to take my new GPS so have no plot of the route but I have that route many times anyway. When I was getting fit in HK before I used to walk home after happy hour using that route. It used to take me about 1h20 from Wan Chai to South Horizons. I needed to do that more often this time round but my nagging cold has cost me the training I needed in preparation for the Greenpower walk. I still need to get the training in in the UK and also need to lose some weight again, not such an easy task. Anyways, tomorrow is my last day in Hong Kong for a while so I hope to make the most of it.

MOVIE: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire [7/10] (review)
Took Stephen to see Harry Potter and he enjoyed it, especially the dragons in the movie, so he told me. I can understand the higher rating on the movie, it is significantly more sinister than previous versions and a fairly rudimentary attempt at showing teenage love. The "Hermione" character was a little OTT with the extreme emontional stuff but then, it's supposed to be a kids movie. I'd personally give it 6/10 but I know Stephen would more likely given it around 8/10 so an even split compromise.

    MOVIE: Chicken Little [7/10] (review)
Took Missy and the kids to see "Chicken Little" this afternoon which was quite good. An interesting take on the story with lots of other movie spoofs in there to make you laugh. The kids definitely enjoyed it and I was able to relax enough to have a laugh or 2. For those who haven't seen it and have kids then I suggest you do go for some light-hearted entertainment.

    Stephanie's birthday today (celeb)
Today is Stephanie's fifth birthday and she is extremely excited which is great! Not opened any presents yet but will be doing so after her party. Missy is currently cooking everything although I have to go an buy some larger pots and pans to help. The down side is that there are not many kids in HK right now with a number of families choosing to go away for the holidays.

Christmas Eve and still full of cold (diary)
It's Christmas Eve and all I want right now is my cold to disappear. Just been downstairs to eat with Missy, the kids and my mum. Will be getting ready later I suppose, a deluge of food ordered for tomorrow which no doubt will require me to pick it up at an unreasonable hour. At least the turkey will be carved this year so I don't have to go through the debacle of messing around trying to find a sharp knife.

Seems to be a quiet Christmas in order so that is good. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas!

Going to bed early does not always help (diary)
Went to bed around 10ish last night and the consequence is I'm up at 4:30. Still got a cold so not impressed but using Dristan Cold. Will try and sleep again in a while...

When is jetag not jetlag (diary)
...when your just plain exhausted! Not sure what timezone I'm in right now but seem to be catch up on an awful lot of sleep right now. I think my regime in UK is definitely going to have to change somewhat. Decided to get up with the kids since I need to go to the doctors today for checkup and anothe rmedicine infusion. From there not sure what I'll do. I want to catch up with various people but may come back for a sleep first before I do anything too rash.

Back in Hong Kong amid the protests (diary)
Didn't think I was that unpopular in Hong Kong!! Seems my return sparked the rioting last night, 1 day after they found out I'd arrived... For some reason the South Korean farmers kicked it off yesterday evening and the result was tear gas in Wan Chai. Apparently New Makati was still open although the management wondered why there was no-one around. Maybe because the police closed Wan Chai!! Anything for a dollar. Today will be the telling day with the WTO summit coming to an end today. Was it worth it? Don't think so, there doesn't seem to be an agreement. So what's this prove? Proves Hong Kong can hold such events I suppose but it doesn't prove that business will be better for it if we have to close down while the event is going on.

On the train to London (diary)
As the caption says I'm on the train to London for a meeting and then off to the airport for my flight tonight. Can't wait to get back this time to see Missy and the kids, 2 months is a long time to be away and I am getting back on the last day of my ticket. Basically I can't wait any longer. Peversly there will be things that I'll miss while I'm away. The final for X Factor although I don't agree with the final line-up. Let's hope it's not the debacle it was last year with the obviously better act coming second so their mentor could promote them. Yes, I'm talking G4. Being here I've not heard of Steve Brookstein again really, a brief appearance in the audtions but not even a mention. After the bad decision to remove Maria from the competition it has been a bit poor. Not sure whether she would have made it to the final but it would have been a better competition. Brenda going out and the one trick pony Andy staying in is plain nuts. The only act I would support if I was here would be Journey South although I'm not sure the act works that well. I think the guitar playing one should look for a solo career but the brother things does work for them.

Other things, Eddie and family. I didn't get a chance to see them for quite a while and we just didn't manage to get together in my fleeting quest to set the world land-speed record between Leeds and Gatwick. Good job really since I only just made it back to Leeds in time for my meetings because of stupid middle lane sitters and people conforming to the speed limit in the outside lane. How dare they!? Don't they know the limit is there for guidance only??? Also will miss Graeme and family since I've only just got to meet him again after 15 years. My other friend from college, Steve Nunn, is someone I continually singularly fail to contact. I've written about a dozen letters and am even carrying a stamp but getting the stamp, envelope and letter to meet at the same time has still elluded me. It would help if I had an email address for him but the address I had was old and was bouncing my mail. Maybe I said something wrong, wouldn't surprise me knowing me, but more likely is that he moved to a lower cost provider or something like that.

Anyway, suppose I'll save a few things for reflection on the flight. Sun's coming up on the train which is a blessing I suppose but I'm not sure it'll make much difference when we travel through the plume of burnt oil a bit further down the track.

HONG KONG BEWARE!! MuthaF be returning soon!

WTO talks taking place in Hong Kong (news)
You've got to love the HK Police. The WTO talks kicked off today and BBC News is reporting that there were several groups of protesters doing stuff including some South Korean farmers who tried to swim the harbour to get to the conference centre. The harbour is truly disgusting!! The translation for Hong Kong is literally "fragrant harbour" but that was long ago in a galaxy far away. Now even the smallest exposure to it would prove literally sickening. Anyways (I digress) the farmers did actually get close to the convention centre only to be turned back by a flotilla of police boats forcing them to swim back to the other side. As if the exposure was not bad enough already!! Excellent!

Full story is here. Oh, by the way, delegates did some stuff and rowed a little too...

Only 2 days to go!!! (diary)
Had a scare yesterday when I went to look if there were any better seats available for my flight. The reference I was given was not the correct one which meant it couldn't find my booking! Phoned up and got the proper reference and also managed to get my frequent flyer number in for the return and the outbound leg which means I don't have to request it's inclusion, potentially.

Getting a bit excited which is unusual for me but this has been a long time away. It is good to push the bounaries but it has been tough for me. Usually it's situation normal since it means getting on yet another plane for yet another mind-numbing journey. Still on BA so I know the movies will be fixed and not good so I'm looking to copy some of my DVD's onto the HDD again for viewing. I'd have to hide the external drive for them as it would present a potential power issue but no problem really.

I had wanted to hand carry this flight but may be prevented from doing so as Missy wants some energy cells for her Braun hair straightener. Not that she cares about the excessive wait I may have to do, "It's no work mahal...". Yet again I become 'Pack-horse Leung'...

    Missed Stephanie's Christmas concert (diary)
One of the real downsides to working away from home is sometimes you miss some of your childrens' developments. This time I've already missed Stephanie in her Christmas concert, something only the Year 1's do, and I'll miss her and Stephen's sports days. Still, only a few days to go until I get back to Hong Kong and see them...

    Traversing England yet again (diary)
Been in London for a couple of days of meetings ending in a COO/CTO dinner and a drink with Marc Schreuder. Back to Leeds for meetings today and a check on what the guys have been up to (since all the stuff is working now!!) and then off to Gatwick tomorrow to attend an offsite at short notice. Back to Leeds on Friday via various places most likely for a weekend of relaxation (I hope).

The guys in the office have done really well and see the fruits of their labour coming through. All credit has to go to Nigel who has stayed on the case despite all the garbage we've had to deal with. Sometime soon he needs to be rewarded but BT is a bit slow on that score...

Lol - Windows driver discovery on Firefly (diary)
Just watching Firefly and they are reprogramming a garbage bin for a scam and the screen had a Windows device driver wizard. Sadness... This is meant to be set 500 years in the future. Windows still available then for programming garbage bins, wow. Wonder how much Bill paid for that?

Great start to the day... not! (diary)
On the 07:20 train again today with wireless (which is a result) but have forgotten my Blackberry and had thought I'd forgotten my pass as well but checking my pocket it seems I have the pass. Oh dear, no reliable email... Shame! Making me feel quite happy right now actually.

Tired as a tired person from Tirednessville and got a full day of meetings ahead. Not back in Leeds until Wednesday AM and realistically tonight is the only night I can get some sleep.

Quiet weekend draws to an end (diary)
Reasonable weekend and fairly quiet. Went to Manchester yesterday to get a new rucksac for hiking in the UK and also got a fleece lining for my jacket. Trying it today then I was happy that I'd purchased it. Buds and I tried to go to watch Doom today but the timing was wrong. I also bought the series "Firelfy" which is the precursor to the movie "Serenity" which was released this year. I've got a couple of days in London with meetings and then back to Leeds to give demos of the new monitoring solution.

Back in Leeds after a day (and night) out in London (diary)
Back in Leeds after a day of external meetings followed by a dinner out and a train journey that arrived 50 minutes late into Leeds. Feeling cold today and have done for quite a few days which I hope is not a pre-cursor to 'flu. Lots of meeting stuff sorted today so a reasonably productive day I suppose. Probably off to the Thai restaurant tonight as I've not been there in a while, days even!!

Turning off the reading pane in Outlook 2003 (technology)
Something that has bugged me for ages is the reading pane in Outlook. I don't like it and don't use it. Every time you create a new folder it is on by default and apparently there is no default way of turning it off in the Outlook UI.

There is a solution or workaround available that is to add "/nopreview" to the end of the 'Target' field in your shortcut. By default Outlook will no longer use the reading pane. You can turn it on within the session but closing and re-opening the application with the switch still active will default to a view with the reading pane off.

To understand some of the other switches available then please go to this link. I'm certainly going to have a play and see what else I can screw up with the switches icon-smiley.gif.

Microsoft Wireless Notebook Laser Mouse 6000 (review)
Trying to sort out comms issues and cut down on stuff. Back to wireless devices and found this new wireless mouse. Can't see the supposed laser but seems to be working well. Smaller in size than I'm used to but realistically only the wheel feels smaller. The receiver has a position in the base of the mouse to store it so you don't lose it which is a very good idea. The battery loader is also different with a top-back loading mechanism rather than the traditional battery gate on the base. Still early days but if this does prove good then it means me dumping yet more stuff out of my bag.

    MuthaF rating: [8/10]
